TV tonight: ‘White Heat,’ ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’

Two Santas wind up on the NYPD's naughty list in Tuesday's Christmas-themed episode of 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine.'

White Heat | TCM, 8 ET/5 PT.

In a promotional push for tomorrow’s TNT debut of Mob City, sister network TCM is offering a quartet of great Mob classics — Little Caesar (5 ET/2 PT), The Public Enemy (6:30 ET/3:30 PT), White Heat (8 ET/5 PT) and The Roaring Twenties (10 ET/7 PT), hosted by Robert Osborne and Mob star Edward Burns. However well-intentioned, the mini-marathon isn’t doing TNT any favors: The films not only make Mob City look inferior in comparison (as most projects would), they point out how old Mob’s conventions are and how frequently we’ve covered this same, by-now-tired territory. Top of the world, indeed.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine | Fox, 8:30 ET/PT.

When it comes to scripted series, your December choices are mainly split between reruns and holiday-themed episodes — as with Brooklyn, which offers a Christmas outing one week after it gave us a Thanksgiving one. This time, rather than cooking dinner, Amy is trying to get the precinct to take a Christmas photo as a gift for Holt. That includes trying to make Rosa smile, which you know won’t go well.

Trophy Wife | ABC, 9:30 ET/PT.

On the other hand, Trophy Wife is holiday free, as it builds an episode around Kate’s attempt to play matchmaker for Diane — and her surprise that setting Diane up proves to be a challenge. The only surprise here would be if the show actually expects viewers to find that surprising.
