| Kazakhstan upset Korea 30-27 in Almaty |

One of the most exciting spectacles in the two-year history of the HSBC Asian Five Nations took place today at the Almaty Central Stadium in Kazakhstan as the hosts upset the heavily fancied Koreans 30-27.Kazakhstan was led by two of its veteran performers flanker Anton "the horse" Rudoy and fullback Maxim Lifontov the top scorer in the 2008 HSBC Asian Five Nations. Together the two combined for all of Kazakhstan's 30 points in an entertaining match that saw the Kazakhs lead Korea 13-3 at halftime after Korean fly-half Hong Jun Ki opened the scoring with a drop goal in the 3rd minute. The second half saw Lifontov and Rudoy combine for another 17 points as Rudoy added a brace to complete his hat trick of tries. Both of Rudoy's tries were converted by Lifontov to bring the score to 27-10 Kazakhstan after a try in the 50th minute from Korean winger Chae Jae Yong. The try was converted by the flyhalf Hong Jun Ki. Kazakhstan seemed comfortably ahead by 17 points with 30 minutes remaining when Korea led a brave fight back through tries to lock Jeong Dae Ik and No. 8 Han Kun Kyu, both of which were converted by fullback Kim Kuen Hyun to bring the score to 27-24 Kazakhstan with 22 minutes remaining. In the 62nd minute, Kim Kuen Hyun slotted a late penalty to bring the score to 27-27 heading into the dying minutes of the match and it seemed that Kazakhstan's efforts were going to go to waste. But a crucial penalty against Korea left it to Lifontov to lift his team to victory. He struck the final penalty sweetly to bring the final score to 30-27 and send the over 2,600 spectators in the grounds into frenzy.Kazakhstan 30: Tries - Anton Rudoy (3) Conversions - Maxim Lifontov (3) Penalties - Lifontov (3)Korea 27: (Tries - Chae Jae Yong, Jeong Dae Ik, Han Kun Kyu) Conversions - Hong Jun Ki (1), Kim Kuen Hyun (2) Penalties - Kim Kuen Hyun (1) Drop goals - Hong Jun Ki (1)Halftime Score: 13-3Attendance: 2,600 |
